With the six nations rugby kicking off, it struck me that the teamwork required on the pitch by the players is the kind of level that we all strive for in our organisations, although not the aggression and physicality.
It is very empowering for an employee to lead a task that requires team input, it helps to grow team spirit and provides automatic training for everyone concerned. For a manager, it can also highlight weaknesses in the team, whether these are technical or personality issues.
By leading a team to the achievement of a task, there are inevitable rewards, natural “back-slapping” from the team members and recognition from customers, suppliers or management.
Empower your employees. Give them team projects to lead.
